The day was a true grind;&nbsp; I was feeling terrible after the wildfire smoke that settled over NYC during the weekend. By the afternoon, I needed a snack, sort of mostly to distract myself from work. I looked around at what I had on hand. I decided to make a play on a snack I know of but had never eaten before, ants on a log. I did not grow up in an ants-on-a-log house, or even a house where there was an expectation that a snack would be prepared for me, so this idea seemed funny and novel to me. And while I did not have “ants,” I did have “acrylic nails.”&nbsp; Making acrylic nails on a log was laborious and messy; I really don’t know why people are making this for their kids. I got peanut butter all over my fingers, and positioning all the acrylic nails (almond slivers) on the logs was excruciating. I had a few blueberries in the fridge, so I threw them on there too. It took longer than expected, and although probably placing ants on a log is faster than acrylic nails, it must take a while. Long enough for me to think about what it really meant to make ants on a log. As I was placing nail after nail onto the logs, I pictured a long line of housewives of middle America alone in their kitchens, silently placing raisins on celery sticks. In my sublet apartment, this performance of hyper domesticity felt saccharine and absurd. But through my alienation, I was transported into the shoes of these women. The mothers of ants on a log. Our labor–chopping celery, peanut buttering, placing ants, biting back tears–our singular desire for order, praying our screaming children would just stop crying and eat this healthy snack. But my singular desire for order was quelled by my delight in seeing how amazing my creations looked. They were crazy, resembling rows of teeth, &nbsp;a ribcage dried in the desert, a piece of celery with peanut butter that fell on the ground, a long knobby finger. Unfortunately, &nbsp;actually eating the acrylic nails on a log was a letdown. This snack was less than the sum of its parts. Without those sweet ants, there was nothing to offset the bitterness of the celery, and the acrylic nails were entirely for show. They added nothing flavor-wise and got completely overpowered by the peanut butter. Luckily, my sublet roommate had some dried cherries, and so we put them on with the acrylic nails. The TEK of housewives, the dried fruit was essential on the log. It greatly improved the snack. My acrylic nails on a log became acrylic nails and beetles on a log. This iteration, a sort of nouveau trad hipster take on the ants on a log, was actually good. Overall, I did enjoy eating the acrylic nails on a log after introducing beetles to the ecosystem of the log. But I probably will never make this snack again. It seemed sad to me. This snack, referential to nature and devoid of rootedness in any food tradition. A bleached and domestic attempt to stop kids from being hungry and trick them into eating something healthy. At the same time, I must honor the delicate balance of the bitterness, fattiness, and sweetness that the true ants on a log must have, and for that I nod to my sisters, the mothers of ants on a log. When I arrived after my 7-hour train ride from VT, I did not have the energy to make dinner, so I went to Ali’s for my favorite food… doubles. I got two chana doubles, $2 each, and the vegetarian buss up dinner, which was a huge plate of cooked vegetables and probably four people’s worth of paratha, for $14. I was so hungry when I got this food, and it was so delicious. The doubles were solid; they had a good, slightly spicy tamarind sauce, and the chana was super tasty. I still cannot believe that each one costs $2….in this economy! But the Vegetarian dinner….I expected it to be good, but I was not ready for this level of deliciousness. First of all, the portion!! I ate this for dinner three nights in a row, which is just wild, and each night I was like, okay, there is no way it was that good; I was just really hungry––but it kept being that good every night…. Which leads me to the second and most important point, the food… it came with curried potatoes, chana, pumpkin, cooked spinach, and cabbage, which was maybe slightly pickled? Idk, it had some crunch and was amazing. The vegetables were so good, each cooked perfectly and with distinct flavors. And the bus up shot, or paratha, was just very delicious, fresh, and again a massive portion. The buss up is a fried bread, so it was very oily;&nbsp; it's not something I could eat every day, but it was so, so good. I would probably get the rice next time and have the buss up for more of a treat. Overall, I loved this food, and I will be going back. Even though I was eating out of the takeout container, it felt like almost a home-cooked meal. (Trinciti still has the edge on the doubles though....) Accessibility: Very accessible, so affordable, wow.&nbsp; Would I recommend: Highly recommend this place!! It’s amazing, it’s halal, it’s cash-only, and the food comes out super fast. I bought this mug because I wanted a travel mug without a plastic lid to avoid microplastics. I’m telling you, it was love at first sip. &nbsp;;) This mug keeps things warm for a long time, and I could put tea or coffee in it without any residual flavors or metallic taste. The wide-mouth design also made it perfect for multiple uses, such as beverages, oatmeal transport, and snacks. It even has a sleek sort of egg-shaped look, which I love, and is emphasized by the Matte White color of my mug. The mug also had a nice flat lid, which I put a sticker from my favorite coffee shop on. There were only two issues with this mug: first, the vacuum seal wasn't perfect, so I couldn’t just throw it in my bag. Second, it is too big for a car cupholder. But, I am not without imperfection, so I do not expect perfection from the people or objects that surround me!!! Today, I took a break from studying and went to get a cortado and commune with the river... While sitting on my favorite rock, my beloved 12oz ceramic-lined Fellow wide mouth travel mug in matte white (and cortado) fell out of my pocket and floated away. Due to my love for this mug and my guilt about littering, I chased it down. I tried to rescue my Fellow mug with long branches and verbalized pleading to the river. It didn't work. Eventually, I gave up and watched it float away. I waved it goodbye and bought the same exact mug. The ClassPass siren scam song lures readers into using the free trial. Each email subject line’s tone is a masterclass in balancing guilt-tripping with the reveal of a little-known secret. Additionally, they employ the most stressful possible emojis to make you question why you won’t and haven’t signed up for the free month. But I’ve signed up for the free month…..many times….I abused this free trial throughout my 20s, taking as many free workout classes as possible. The ClassPass free trial has dragged me to some of the darkest corners of humanity: knockoff SoulCycle classes in the basements of buildings in the Financial District of NYC, and reformer Pilates classes in London, complete with an “Ohm,” a Dua Lipa soundtrack, and shavasana.&nbsp; But still, confronted with “⚠️🚨⏰😬👀,” I shudder... &amp;&amp; question why I am not attending a core power class right now... touché, ClassPass. Looking back through these emails, I have to admit this is an effective and evil showing from ClassPass. And how they got my law school email, I will never know. Accessibility: Idk, I feel like this is very accessible but maybe only like women of a certain age are being bombarded by these emails?? Would I recommend: no, it really does make me sad to be a constant target of corporate financial extraction attempts. Tipsy and smiling in the backseat of an Uber after dinner with Kathleen, on the uptown train writing a birthday card and putting on lip gloss, rushing home to get ready to go out. I squeeze. Today, my feeling was, summer 2022, getting off my shift from the wine bar in the evening, heading around the corner to another bar to meet someone, it was humid, I loved it. I was about to cross Wycoff Avenue. I wasn’t thinking about where I was going. I just felt satisfied and exhausted, the end of a long day on my feet. The streets are green, the sky is purple, the skyline still barely yellow. There are people out, but I can’t hear them. I’m going to catch up with someone who I love, who is also sticky and hot from a long day. We will talk shit and laugh, resting in understanding. I am looking both ways and thinking about finding a seat at the bar and getting a drink.Here, it's dark out. The river is frozen. I am sitting. Though Tony’s doesn’t have my fave kind of pie, square — preferably grandma, they have a pretty solid NY slice so I go for that and the ubiquitous A&amp;W root beer. The pizza is super cheesy and heavy but the sweetness and slight brightness of the root beer kind of cuts how oily the pizza is. TBH both are kind of mid individually, but together they are fabulous. Having this perfect pair tn is bringing me back to many Friday nights on my dad’s weekend, when he would would get my siblings &amp; I from my mom’s house &amp;&amp; drive us to one of the most iconic Rhode Island pizza institutions, Twin’s in North Providence. The place where my devotion to the root beer pizza pairing began.&nbsp; At Twins we always ate in the restaurant, in a booth, in the non smoking section, &amp; ordered the same thing, - a half cheese half pepperoni pizza, medium well done and a pitcher of root beer. The light was low and the dishes they brought to the table were always warm. We would poke at the fake plants and dark wood paneling, we’d draw in my dad’s sketchbook and all over the ad’s on the paper placemats, turning every real estate agent into a vampire. We laughted, talked and attempted stealthiness shooting straw sleeves at eachother. The pizza was so good, being there felt like belonging. We were going though a lot at that time but the sweetness of the rootbeer helped cut the heaviness of it all. I would not have gone out of my way to buy the shake, but my brother and I were a rest stop on our way to see family and we got got by their McMarketing ploy.&nbsp; The flavor of this shake was the the color of this shake — essence of pastel purple. I wanted to love it but,,, I really didnt like it at all. It tasted a little like blueberries, a little like candy and a little like vanilla ice cream, it wasn’t working for me. The taste was an uncanny valley of blueberry smoothie and McDonaldsLandia Purple flavor TM.&nbsp;Dont get me wrong, I love blueberries,,&nbsp; but the artificial/not so artificial blueberry flavor in the Grimace birthday shake was so out of place to me. Blueberries taste like health and earth and end of summer and this is just not what you come to McDonald’s for. As uninteresting as it would be they would have been better off opting for the obvious, “cake batter flavor” with purple flair. To be honest with you readers,,, my hope was that the taste of this shake would bring me into the fantasy of what it would feel like to be Grimace’s friend, to be blasted into memory of Grimace’s bowling party or 4th grade sleepover. What does Grimace’s house look like, what would his Birthday cake look like? Where is grimace from? Is it a place with a lot of blueberries???? This shake did not deliver, ther was nothing about this taste that said birthday, or Grimace,&nbsp; I really didn’t find it festive in any way......, it was just kind of puzzling &amp; purple tasting. Perhaps I’m projecting my human ideas birthday flavors on this McMonster,, or maybe I just believe Grimace deserves better... Despite my dissapointment I do hope Grimace’s numbers are good enough that he gets to have a birthday next year though, HBD Grimace. Accessibility: McDonald’s is everywhere so its easy to find but the shake costs 6.50 I think? and this seems pretty steep given the product… you could get some bougie, high end, organic, sustainable, fairtrade ass ice cream for this price. The book takes the form of essays and conversations, the contributors are activists, scientists, organizers and historians, all who’s work and passion is climate justice. The title is apt and is summed up in this quote from one of the last essays of the book; "If you're worried that it's too late to do anything about climate change and we should all just give up, I have great news for you: that day is not coming in your lifetime. As long as you have breath in your body, you will have work to do." Mary Annaïse Heglar This book does run into an issue that I’ve seen in several other books that take this form however, at times it is very general and repetitive. Having many contributors that all agree about the same issue is great but can lead to a lot of overlap. These are some of the essays that stuck with me;&nbsp; To Hell With Drowning - Julian Agunon From the Hunger Strike With Love - Nikayla Jefferson The Asteroid and the Fern - Jacquelin Gill (this one was very intense for me and made me feel at once completely grounded and resolute in my fight for climate justice while also having a near total existential panic and made me contend with a sense of nihilism, I was also in a strange mental space when I read it so maybe this wouldn’t be your experience)Imagination is a Muscle - a conversation with adrienne maree brown and the editors At this point I have read a handful of books sort of like this and something that I appreciated in this book was hearing from Pacific Islander organizers and activists. These are some of the most frontline communities when it comes to suffering horrific affects of the climate catastrophe (like the literal loss of their homelands) and their voices are too frequently left out of these conversations. This book also included two fictional essays written from the perspective of people living in a future where humanity fought the fossil fuel industry and turned the tides of climate catastrophe. I found these essays a bit forced and I didn’t love them as pieces of writing but the fact that they exist matters to me. The narrative that we must and will succumb to the wills and evils wrought by the fossil fuel industry is deep. This “crisis of story telling” will take so much undoing to allow people to imagine a world without violet resource extraction. It will take more storytelling and rewriting to show people that this world, this future is not one of lack &amp; of incredible sacrifice but instead one of plenty, abundance of the beautiful things and of the things necessary for life, clean air, water, good food, community ect. ! For this reason I’m really glad these essays are included and I hope they inspire more people to write of this future. Accessibility: Fairly accessible, I know the Brooklyn Public library has a copy, its also avalible for purchase online for between $6-$15, if you dont fee like reading the book you can also visit the website it simply provides resources for how anyone can learn more and get involved in the flight for climate justice. I was dazed and in my head &amp;&amp; was about to turn the corner on to my street when I looked up and saw it there. Immediately I liked everything about this cloud, the line of shadow at the bottom, its split edge on the right side, its very slow pace, all so charming to me. I stood there taking a few photos and watching, though nothing could capture the humor and optimism of this cloud.&nbsp; The left side,&nbsp; thinner &amp; longer than the right looked like it was leading the rest of the cloud, leading the slow race, it could have even been trying to seperate from the rest. I stood there a while watching and it never split off, the right side followed, reaching behind like a lobster claw or an open mouth. My neighbors looked up toward the cloud as they walked by me watching. I wonder if they saw the lobster claw reaching into the sky,, I wonder if someone else down the road saw the claw close, the mouth fed. Its covered in graffiti and stickers, pretty unremarkable, collection time is at 2:00pm. This postbox came into my life because I was a day late shipping out a birthday card for one of my best friends. This past week I was freelancing at a photo studio in Chelsea so I figured I’d look for a post box on my 15 minute walk from my train to the studio. I got off the train and went up 8th Ave, &amp;&amp; boom there’s a box. I cross the street past a family of German tourists and put my letter in. I felt around to make sure the letter went in because something felt jammed. The letter was gone but there was a,,,, texture and stickyness on the letter slot. It was gross and comically expected.&nbsp; The next day I’m shooting in the same studio so on my way to work&nbsp; decide to I check out the post box again. I don’t know what I was expecting to find, but it was still there the next day, same stickers and graffiti. But 5 days later my card did not arrive in time for my friend’s birthday. I’m not saying its this box’s FAULT the letter didn’t arrive in time but, on top of being kinda gross it also only has collection times at 2:00pm.... Most boxes have at least 2 collection times, I wil be opting for one of those in the future.&nbsp; Accessibility: Very accessible if you live in NYC, This box is two blocks from the north most exit of the 23rd st AC stop Would I recommend: I would not recommend this box, even the graffiti is boring.&nbsp; It’s kinda sticky and it didn’t even get the letter to my friend on time - I have beef with this box. I will not use it again. Its part of a “live off the land’ make everything yourself, doomsday prepper thing she’s into. Though her interest in these things is deeply upsetting to me, the kombucha is good -- its one of many ferments she makes, and she’s nearly perfected the art. This particular kombucha is made with mango juice and ginger, its light, sparkly and has just a slight earthyness&nbsp; to it, it really tastes like summer and citrus. You feel the ginger bite you back and its not farty as many kombuchas, super bright and acidic. I drank this with my younger brother after breakfast while we listened to Denise tell us about how ginger is nature’s Ibuprofen – and if we drink this we wont get sick. The idea that this drink would cure all of my ailments definetly affected my experience of it, and it was a touch that I appreciated! It was like the real life version of when you buy something healthy and read all of the info on the wrapper so you can feel like you’ve made a really healthy choice. This booch drinks like a light italian soda, slightly sweet and effervescent, perfect to sip while you watch a Youtube video about how to waterglass 100 eggs. Accessibility: This is not accessible, if you are a member of my family you have easy access it would be pretty hard to get your hands on this if not Would I recommend: Yes, I recommend my stepmom’s kombucha to all who pass through her and my Dad’s house Who should you enjoy this with: Enjoy it with your little brother, you’ll need an ally when the conversation turns from making kombucha to total grid collapse.
